Thoughts

How are social medias draining our energy and attention? Why is it so addictive? Recently I found out that I used way too much time on social medias and reddit like apps. I'm using them while commuting, at the gym, during breaks etc. Theoretically there's enormous information input from these resources. However, at the end of the day, I don't really remember much of it. In another word, I don't really care about it either.

I figured it out that my brain craves to be entertained by these information, and hates to be bored. (hope I'm not the only one that feels powerless to this social media addiction) However, my daily attention tank is consumed bit by bit when processing these information, and my brain doesn't really enter its standby mode anymore.

Cause it's always easier for my brain to accept/receive information than actively think/create thoughts during the standby mode, my phone successfully lures me to these apps when I don't have much to do. Scrolling on the phone squeezes the time fragments to let my brain rest and think about "bigger problems" in life (who I will be, what I will do etc.)

Experiment

Set a timer for each social media app. I set 0 mins on Instagram cause I spend tons of time on reels; 20 mins on reddit in case I need to look up for some info; 0 mins on shopping apps, 60 mins on whatsapp like apps. I know, it's not like getting clean from social medias in one night, but it's a good start for me personally. Besides the timer, I will try to not use my phone as much as possible, e.g. always use less than the time budget! Fingers crossed!!!
